The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Impacts and Policy Department (IPD) of CARE-C Centre of Excellence on a full-time basis (100%) for its premises in Athalassas Campus.
The selected candidate will join a research team that aims to develop a satellite-based / near-real-time fire detection system and integrate it into an operational web-based platform to inform the Cyprus Fire Service.
More specifically the successful candidate will engage with the GEOSFIRE project as an active research staff of the CARE-C Impact & Policy Department (IPD). The CARE-C Impact & Policy Department aims to translate scientific research into evidence-based policies by assessing climate and environmental impacts and supporting governments and stakeholders with practical, science-driven solutions for adaptation and sustainable development.
The selected candidate is expected to support current research at the CyI on Fire detection with qualifications described hereafter.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
· Perform internationally competitive scientific research on satellite-based fire detection using AI.
· Contribute to the assessment of fire detection systems using satellite products over Cyprus and develop an operational web-based platform to monitor in near-real-time fires detected from space.
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
· PhD in Atmospheric Sciences/Remote Sensing
· Excellent knowledge of scientific programming and scripting, including Python, R, and/or MATLAB
· Experience with data visualization techniques and interface/toolbox development
· Background in machine learning and/or artificial intelligence methods
· Relevant publications in scientific journals or peer-reviewed conferences
Position Specific Preferred Qualifications:
· Knowledge of environmental and/or geospatial modelling application
· Experience working with remote sensing data, including satellite imagery, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data analysis
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly with large and complex datasets
· Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) environments

Duration of appointment:
The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 9 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds.
Remuneration details:
Salary Band: CYI4(1-9)
Position’s Starting Salary: CYI4.1 - €37641.89, CYI4.2 - €39457.60, CYI4.3 - €41273.31, CYI4.4 - €43089.02
