Centre / Unit
Business Development Unit (BDU)
The Business Development Unit plays a key role in strengthening CMMI’s external partnerships, supporting funding acquisition, and enhancing the Institute’s visibility and positioning across the Blue Economy ecosystem. The Unit works closely with research centres and leadership to translate scientific excellence into impactful collaborations, projects, and strategic opportunities.
Job Purpose
The Business Development Officer will support the development of strategic partnerships, funding opportunities, and external engagement activities, while also contributing to CMMI’s brand visibility and communication efforts.
This is a hands-on, execution-focused role (approximately 2–4 years of experience), suited to a proactive professional looking to build their expertise across business development and communications within a dynamic, international research environment. The role focuses on supporting and implementing activities rather than leading strategic direction.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Support business development activities, including identification of partnership and funding opportunities
• Contribute to the preparation of proposals, bids, and commercial presentations
• Support the development of communication materials, including articles, reports, newsletters, and website content
• Assist in the management of CMMI’s social media presence
• Assist in the implementation of digital marketing and communication strategies
• Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to support project and business development activities
• Track and report on performance indicators such as engagement metrics, campaign results, and pipeline development
• Support coordination and follow-up of business development actions and initiatives
• Ensure compliance with internal procedures, data protection, and organisational policies
• Report to the Head of Business Development Unit and collaborate closely with relevant Centres/Units
Minimum Eligibility Criteria (Required Qualifications)
• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, or a related field
• Approximately 2–4 years of relevant professional experience in business development, communications, marketing, or a related role
•Demonstrated experience in supporting projects, proposals, or campaigns
• Experience in supporting proposals, bids, or commercial activities
• Experience in content creation and digital communication
• Hands-on experience in managing social media platforms
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Desirable Qualifications
• Master’s degree in a relevant field
• Experience in EU-funded projects or research environments
• Familiarity with CRM systems and digital tools
• Experience working in an international or multicultural environment
• Basic design skills (e.g., Canva, PowerPoint)
• Exposure to partnership development or stakeholder engagement activities
Skills & Competencies
· Experience in business development/ partnerships
· Ability to support proposals, bids, and commercial presentations.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills for external stakeholders.
· Competence in content creation (articles, reports, newsletters, website copy).
· Hands-on experience managing social media accounts,
· Understanding of digital marketing and communication strategies across channels.
· Strong project coordination and multitasking skills in a fast-paced environment.
· Ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders and ensure timely follow-ups and execution.
· Basic analytical skills to track performance (social media metrics, campaign results, pipeline data).
· Proactive, self-driven attitude.
Type of Employment
· Full-time or part-time position, with availability of more than 20 hours per week
· Short fixed-term contract, with possibility of renewal
· Expected start date: As soon as possible
· Early-career professionals with 2–3 years of experience
