DEPUTY HEAD TEACHER

Starting date: 1st August 2027

The English School, Nicosia invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced educational leaders for the position of Deputy Head Teacher.

The Deputy Head Teacher is a senior leader who supports the Headmaster in the strategic and operational leadership of the School. The successful candidate will translate the School's mission, values and priorities into high standards of education, conduct, safeguarding and organisational practice, and will deputise for the Headmaster when required.

Key responsibilities

•  Support the Headmaster in implementing and evaluating the School's strategy, School Action Plan and annual priorities.

•  Provide visible leadership for high-quality teaching, learning, curriculum design and assessment across the School.

•  Help ensure an ambitious, coherent and inclusive curriculum aligned with GCSE/IGCSE, A Level, Apolytirion and other applicable requirements.

•  Lead a calm, respectful and ambitious school culture, with consistent expectations for behaviour, attendance and student conduct.

•  Promote safeguarding, child protection, student welfare, inclusion and belonging.

•  Line manage designated leaders and support appraisal, professional development, effective operations, quality assurance and compliance.

•  Undertake an appropriate teaching commitment and other duties agreed with the Headmaster.

Person Specification

• Recognised degree and appropriate teaching qualification, with eligibility to work and, where applicable, teach in Cyprus (Essential)
• Substantial successful teaching experience and a strong understanding of high-quality classroom practice (Essential)
• Successful senior leadership or substantial whole-school middle-leadership experience, including responsibility for people and school improvement (Essential)
• Strong knowledge of British-style education and GCSE/IGCSE and A Level pathways (Essential)
• Evidence of improving standards, systems, culture, teaching or student outcomes (Essential)
• Current understanding of safeguarding and child-protection responsibilities and a demonstrable commitment to student welfare (Essential)
• Excellent written and spoken English, sound judgement, integrity, discretion, resilience and emotional intelligence (Essential)
• Leadership in an HMC, COBIS, British international, selective or multicultural school; and/or wider expertise in inspection, academic strategy, digital learning, Board work or university preparation (Desirable)
• A good command of the Greek language and familiarity with the private education system in Cyprus (Would be considered an advantage but is not a requirement)

Remuneration and benefits 

The gross annual salary for this position will be within the range of €67.000 to €90.000 including the 13th salary. Appointment within this range will be determined based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and relevant experience, using objective and gender-neutral criteria. 

The remuneration package also includes: 

• Provident fund/gratuity 
• Annual salary increment, subject to successful performance evaluation.
• 13th salary, payable annually and pro-rated during the first year of employment.
• Employer contribution of 2% of the basic salary to the Provident Fund, with the option for additional voluntary employee contributions.
• Participation in the Cyprus Social Insurance Scheme.
• Paid school holidays and public holidays in accordance with the School calendar.
• Paid sick leave in accordance with the School’s policy.
• 70% discount on school fees for children of full-time staff, subject to the applicable terms.
