Job Description: Science Technician 

 

Position Summary:


The Science Technician provides technical, practical, and administrative support to the Science Faculty, ensuring that laboratories, equipment, materials, and resources are maintained to a high standard and are readily available to support outstanding teaching and learning. The Science Technician plays a key role in promoting a safe, efficient, and engaging laboratory environment for students and staff. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Laboratory Preparation and Support

  • Prepare, set up, and clear away equipment, chemicals, specimens, and materials for practical science lessons.
  • Support Biology, Chemistry, ESS and Physics teaching by ensuring practical activities are fully resourced and safely delivered.
  • Assist teaching staff with demonstrations, investigations, experiments, and practical assessments as required.
  • Prepare materials and equipment for internal and external examinations.
  • Maintain laboratory readiness and ensure teaching spaces are organised and functional.

Equipment and Resource Management

  • Maintain, clean, calibrate, and test laboratory equipment to ensure safe and effective operation.
  • Manage inventories of chemicals, consumables, apparatus, and laboratory resources.
  • Monitor stock levels and coordinate purchasing and replenishment of supplies.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment, resources, and inventories.
  • Organise and maintain preparation rooms, storage areas, and laboratories.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with school health and safety policies and relevant regulations.
  • Maintain the safe storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals, biological materials, and laboratory waste.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections of laboratories and equipment.
  • Maintain safety documentation, risk assessments, and chemical inventories.
  • Ensure laboratory safety equipment, including eyewash stations, first aid kits, spill kits, and fire safety equipment, is regularly checked and maintained.
  • Report hazards, accidents, equipment faults, and maintenance issues promptly.

Administrative Support

  • Assist the Head of Science with departmental administration related to laboratory resources and equipment.
  • Support budgeting and procurement processes through effective stock control and resource planning.
  • Maintain records required for inspections, audits, and accreditation processes.
  • Assist with science fairs, STEM events, enrichment activities, and departmental projects.

School Community Support

  • Support extracurricular science activities, clubs, competitions, and events.
  • Assist in the preparation of displays and exhibitions that promote science learning.
  • Contribute to the development of a positive and engaging learning environment within the Science Department.

What We’re Looking For:

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma, vocational qualification, degree, or equivalent experience in a science-related field.
  • Practical laboratory experience in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety procedures.
  • Competent IT skills, including Google suite, Microsoft Office and database or inventory management systems.
  • Knowledge about procurement and supply channels locally.

  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, students, and support staff.

  • Fluent English Language (C1-C2).

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous experience working as a Science Technician in a school environment.
  • Experience supporting international curricula such as IB, IGCSE, A Level, AP, or equivalent.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Experience managing chemical inventories and laboratory safety systems.
  • Familiarity with data-logging equipment, digital microscopes, and modern laboratory technologies.
