Innovation Officer
Job Description
The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) is a Centre of Excellence for marine and maritime research, innovation and technology development and has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and matching funding from the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. The CMMI pulls together expertise from local universities, industry and international partners.
Role Summary
The Innovation Officer supports CMMI’s innovation and commercialisation activities by helping transform research outputs into market-ready solutions, products, and services. The role contributes to technology transfer, IP management, and entrepreneurship initiatives, working across research divisions and with external industry partners, startups, and investors.
Key Responsibilities
Support the assessment of research outputs for innovation and commercialisation potential.
Assist in managing invention disclosures, prior art searches, and IP documentation.
Coordinate basic IP protection workflows in collaboration with external patent attorneys.
Maintain the Knowledge, Innovation & Enterpeneurhsip Centre innovation pipeline and update TRL (Technology Readiness Level) progress with research teams.
Contribute to feasibility studies, market analyses, and commercial opportunity assessments.
Support the development of business models and value propositions for emerging technologies.
Assist in preparing licensing proposals, innovation briefs, and commercial pitch material.
Maintain relationships with startups, industry partners, accelerators, and innovation networks.
Prepare monitoring reports, dashboards, and innovation KPIs for internal reporting.
Organise workshops and training activities on IP, innovation management, and commercialisation.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, Business Innovation, Intellectual Property, or related field (Master’s preferred).
2–4 years of experience in innovation management, technology transfer, startup support, or R&D commercialisation.
Experience with research environments, startups, or EU-funded innovation projects will be considered an advantage.
Skills & Competencies
Understanding of IP management (patents, trademarks, copyrights) and technology transfer.
Familiarity with TRL assessment, business model design, and market validation.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent organisational, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Ability to work across multidisciplinary technical and business teams.
Proactive mindset with interest in innovation and entrepreneurship.
