Senior Accountant

On behalf of our client, a well-established accounting, audit and advisory firm based in Latsia, Nicosia, we are seeking to recruit an experienced Senior Accountant to join its professional team.

The firm serves a diverse portfolio of local and international clients, providing comprehensive accounting, audit, VAT, tax, payroll and advisory services. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who can manage client portfolios independently while contributing to the development of junior team members.

Role Overview

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting requirements of an assigned client portfolio, ensuring accurate financial records and the timely completion of accounting, VAT and routine tax-compliance obligations.

The successful candidate will prepare accounts up to trial-balance and financial-statement level, review accounting information, resolve client queries and support the audit process. The role will also involve reviewing the work of junior team members and providing practical guidance when required.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the accounting requirements of an assigned portfolio of local and international clients.
• Maintain complete and accurate accounting records in accordance with applicable accounting principles and internal procedures.
• Perform and review bookkeeping entries, including purchases, sales, receipts, payments and journals.
• Prepare and review bank, supplier, customer, intercompany and balance-sheet reconciliations.
• Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies and outstanding reconciliation items.
• Maintain general ledgers, supporting schedules and complete, audit-ready accounting files.
• Prepare accounts up to trial-balance level.
• Assist with or prepare management accounts, financial statements, cash-flow reports and other financial information.
• Prepare and submit VAT returns, VIES declarations and other routine statutory submissions.
• Support the preparation of income-tax returns and other Cyprus tax-compliance work.
• Monitor statutory filing deadlines and ensure that all required documentation is obtained and retained.
• Review source documents for completeness, accuracy and appropriate authorisation.
• Communicate directly with clients to request records, clarify transactions and resolve accounting queries.
• Provide clients with professional guidance regarding routine accounting, VAT and documentation matters.
• Support the audit team by preparing schedules, reconciliations and supporting documentation.
• Review the work of junior accountants and provide feedback, training and practical guidance.
• Allocate and monitor accounting tasks where appropriate.
• Identify errors, unusual transactions, missing information and compliance concerns and escalate significant matters to management.
• Use accounting software, Microsoft Excel and electronic document-management systems effectively and securely.
• Contribute to the timely and efficient completion of client portfolios.

Requirements

• University degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or another related discipline.
• At least three years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within an accounting, audit or professional-services firm.
• Strong practical knowledge of bookkeeping, double-entry accounting and account reconciliations.
• Proven ability to prepare accounts independently up to trial-balance level.
• Good understanding of financial statements and applicable accounting principles.
• Strong working knowledge of Cyprus VAT, VIES and routine tax-compliance requirements.
• Experience managing multiple client assignments and statutory deadlines.
• ACCA, ACA or another relevant professional qualification, completed or in progress, will be considered an advantage.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
• Excellent command of Greek and English, both written and spoken.
• Ability to review accounting work, identify issues and recommend practical solutions.
• Strong organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Professionalism, integrity, confidentiality and personal accountability.
• Ability to work independently and perform effectively under pressure.
• Strong client-service and communication skills.
• Ability to guide, support and develop junior members of the accounting team.
