Accountant
Job Description
Universal Life is seeking to recruit an Accountant to join the Finance Department, at the Company’s Head Offices in Nicosia. The selected candidate will report to the Company’s Chief Accountant and will be involved in all areas of Accounting Operations.
Main Responsibilities
Accounting & Operational Oversight
Review and verify accounting entries related to premiums, claims, reinsurance, commissions, and investments.
Ensure that reconciliations of technical and non-technical accounts are completed timely and are of high quality.
Ensure accurate journal entries and compliance with the company’s accounting policies and regulatory framework.
Month-End and Year-End Procedures
Lead monthly and annual financial closings, ensuring completeness and timeliness of internal and external reporting.
Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for internal and external audits, including Solvency II-related data.
Tax & Regulatory Compliance
Prepare and submit VAT returns, tax computations, and IR4, ensuring full compliance with local tax laws applicable to insurance companies.
Monitor developments in tax and regulatory changes and assess their impact on the organization.
Audit & Internal Controls
Serve as a key point of contact for statutory, tax, regulatory and internal audits.
Strengthen internal controls and support the implementation of best practices in financial risk management.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Collaborate with other departments and functions to ensure smooth and accurate financial integration.
Liaise with IT teams to support data accuracy and automation initiatives.
Process Optimization & Digital Transformation
Participate in the automation of accounting and reporting processes (e.g. IFRS 17 tools, SAP enhancements).
Identify areas for increased efficiency and reduced operational risk.
Insurance Finance & IFRS Reporting
Assist in the preparation of financial statements in accordance with IFRSs.
Support the Chief Accountant in regulatory reporting to the Superintendent of Insurance and other authorities.
Other
Take on other relevant responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the Chief Accountant.
Requirements
A University degree (or equivalent) in Accounting, Finance or related field.
ACA / ACCA (or equivalent) professional qualification will be considered an advantage.
At least 3 years of experience, ideally with experience in insurance accounting or a Big 4 audit portfolio focused on insurance clients.
Hands-on experience with accounting systems. Knowledge of SAP or IFRS 17 software will be considered an advantage.
In-depth knowledge of IFRSs, particularly IFRS 17, IFRS 9, and Solvency II reporting will be considered an advantage.
Strong understanding of Cyprus tax legislation, with particular focus on the insurance industry.
Advanced Excel skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Excellent command of the Greek and English languages (verbal and written).
Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
Excellent time management and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
Ability to influence and work with other teams across the organisation to achieve objectives.
