Why we need you: We are seeking a Head of Legal & Compliance to lead and strengthen MCTC’s legal and compliance function within a fast-growing international maritime services group. You will play a key role in overseeing all legal, contractual, and regulatory matters across the business, ensuring robust governance, managing risk, and supporting commercial operations. Working closely with senior leadership team, you will ensure the company operates in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations while enabling sustainable business growth.
Here’s what you’ll be doing:
- Overseeing the full lifecycle of contracts across the Group (client agreements, MSAs, SOWs, SLAs, supplier/vendor agreements, consultancy agreements, NDAs, addendums).
- Supporting the review of agreements prepared by the Legal Advisor, ensuring alignment, compliance, and risk awareness.
- Leading and supporting contract negotiations with clients, suppliers, and business partners.
- Acting as the main legal and compliance point of contact for internal and external stakeholders.
- Providing practical, commercially focused legal advice to support day-to-day operations and strategic decisions.
- Establishing and improving contracting processes, approval workflows, and legal governance frameworks.
- Overseeing compliance across sanctions, AML/KYC, GDPR, data privacy, and international regulatory requirements.
- Supporting and strengthening due diligence frameworks, including client onboarding and supplier assessments.
- Monitoring legal, regulatory, and reputational risks and implementing appropriate mitigation measures.
- Ensuring alignment between legal, compliance, QA, and operational teams.
- Coordinating with external legal counsel and managing external legal spend effectively.
- Developing and maintaining internal legal and compliance policies, procedures, and controls.
- Delivering internal training and awareness on legal and compliance topics.
- Supporting dispute resolution, claims handling, and escalation management.
- Partnering closely with the CFO, COO, HR, and other departments on legal and compliance matters.
You need these qualifications:
- Qualified Cyprus Bar lawyer with 5–8 years PQE and strong knowledge of corporate, commercial, and regulatory frameworks.
- Proven maritime/shipping industry experience.
- Strong expertise in contract drafting, negotiation, and risk management, including cross-border agreements.
- Good understanding of sanctions, AML/KYC, and GDPR/data protection.
- Ability to independently manage legal and compliance matters with strong ownership and judgment.
- Highly organised, detail-oriented, with strong analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
- Confident communicator, able to engage effectively with senior stakeholders and external partners.
- Experience building processes and compliance frameworks, and coordinating with external counsel.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion.
- Fluent in English (written and verbal).
It would be nice if you have:
- Experience working in a fast-growing or international organisation.
- Exposure to multi-jurisdictional legal and compliance environments.
- Experience supporting or partnering closely with cross-functional teams (Finance, Operations, HR, Compliance).
- Familiarity with building or enhancing internal legal/compliance functions.
- Additional exposure to regulatory audits, inspections, or compliance reviews.
