The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Impacts and Policy Department (IPD) of CARE-C Centre of Excellence on a full-time basis (100%) for its premises in Athalassas Campus.
The selected candidate will join a research team that aims to assess climate change impacts on health.
More specifically the successful candidate will engage with the ISMED-CLIM project, which aims to advance the state-of-the-art knowledge on the effects of climate change on non-communicable diseases and vector-borne infections through a multidisciplinary approach. The project focuses on the Mediterranean region and aims to engage and mobilize regional policy and social stakeholders, as well as citizens, in implementing mitigation solutions. ISMED-CLIM aims to investigate the epidemiology of exposure to air pollution, vector-borne pathogens, and climate change-related extreme events, such as extreme temperatures, droughts, floods, and wildfires, in the Mediterranean region.
The selected candidate is expected to support current research at the CyI on the health consequences associated with non-communicable diseases and climate change scenarios. For this, the ability to perform impact assessment through statistical, numerical and epidemiological modelling and data analysis, as well as producing high-quality research output, are essential.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
· Perform internationally competitive scientific research on statistical modelling for quantifying extreme weather and pollution effects on human health.
· Contribute to the assessment of climate impacts on health, climate risk and vulnerability review, policy landscape and recommendations.
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
· PhD in Natural or Mathematical Sciences, or Environmental Science/Engineering, Epidemiology, Public Health, or a relevant subject.
· R and/or Python scripting
· Visualization and interface toolbox development methods
· Machine learning and/or AI background
· Understanding of physical and mathematical concepts
· Numeracy and calculus skills
· Willingness to travel and spend time in Partner organizations
Position Specific Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience with analysis of environmental data, particularly weather and climate data sets
· Experience with observational data (ground, remote sensing, lidar, satellite)
· Experience with evaluation statistical tools and software, particularly R and Python
· Experience with GIS systems
· Relevant publications in scientific journals or peer-reviewed conferences.

Duration of appointment:
The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds.
Remuneration details:
Salary Band: CYI4(1-9)
Position’s Starting Salary: CYI4.1 - €37641.89, CYI4.2 - €39457.60, CYI4.3 - €41273.31, CYI4.4 - €43089.02
