The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) invites applications for the recruitment of qualified applicants for the position of Project Manager for projects of the Maritime Human Element Centre (MHEC) of CMMI, situated in Cyprus. The employment period is a fixed-term one-year contract, with the possibility of renewal.
The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute:
The CMMI is a non-profit, research, innovation and technology development organisation established in Cyprus, supported by EU funds via the Teaming program, as well as the Government of Cyprus and established industry stakeholders. The CMMI pulls together expertise from local universities and industry, and international partners. To date, the CMMI has attracted more than EUR 10m of competitive funding for Research, Innovation and Technology Development projects across 30 EU-funded, national, and other collaborative projects with renowned partners.
At CMMI, the Marine Social Science Division brings together expertise on the human-ocean relationship through its three dedicated centres: the Maritime Human Element Centre (MHEC), the Centre for Ocean Governance and International Cooperation, and the Marine Cultural Heritage Centre. These centres advance our understanding of how society interacts with the marine environment and support evidence-based, inclusive ocean governance.
Candidate profile:
For new funded projects, we seek a Project Manager who, under the supervision of the MHEC Acting Head, will lead and coordinate impactful projects that advance their disciplines beyond the state-of-the-art and build capacity for researchers in Cyprus. The candidate will have the unique opportunity to work with the project’s partners, which are all leading universities and research centres in France, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, among others.
The ideal candidate will have experience in project delivery and/or grant writing and be comfortable working on R&D or innovation-focused initiatives. Strong written and verbal communication skills in both English and Greek are essential.
Experience with EU-funded projects (e.g., Horizon Europe, Digital Europe, EDF), project budgeting, and using grant management systems such as Horizon and RIF platforms is highly desirable. A PMP or similar certification, and familiarity with the EU funding landscape, particularly in marine social sciences, will be considered a plus.
CMMI is looking for someone who is detail-oriented, organised, and capable of managing multiple tasks. A proactive approach, team spirit, and the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders are key to succeeding in this role.
Role Overview:
The Project Manager will play a key role in the planning, coordination, and delivery of EU-funded research and innovation projects. They will be actively involved in most major aspects of our ongoing work, including proposal writing, deliverables, event organisation, coordination, and stakeholder engagement. The successful candidate will be a central point of contact across projects, ensuring smooth implementation and collaboration across partners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Actively contribute to the preparation of project proposals, including budgeting preparation, writing technical and administrative sections as required. Support the preparation of deliverables and coordinate activities to meet project objectives.
- Plan and coordinate project-related meetings, take minutes, and ensure follow-up actions. Organise and oversee incoming and outgoing staff exchanges with partners and colleagues, ensuring effective planning and implementation.
- Lead and support stakeholder engagement, dissemination events, and professional meetings. Contribute to the organisation of activities such as Summer Schools, Scientific Conferences, and Hackathons.
- Manage day-to-day project operations, ensuring delivery is on time, within budget, and to a high standard. Serve as the central contact for the project team and partners, promoting strong working relationships.
- Support the assessment, documentation, and procurement processes for research infrastructure and equipment. Assist in the ongoing management of facilities and infrastructure developed through project funding.
- Develop and implement communication strategies. Keep the team informed of deadlines and progress, and prepare content for promotional materials including banners, posters, brochures, and webinars.
- Develop and maintain detailed project timelines, identify potential risks, and prepare contingency plans to minimise disruption.
- Monitor and control project expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgets and financial targets.
- Ensure that all project documentation, outputs, and activities meet agreed quality standards and reporting requirements.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant discipline. A degree in Science, Engineering, Education, or a relevant field will be considered an advantage. A Master’s degree is preferable.
- Ability to research, understand, and contribute to R&D/R&I matters.
- Work experience in project implementation and/or grant application writing
- Ability to present and write in English and Greek.
Advantageous:
- Experience in managing and successfully delivering complex projects.
- Experience with leading or contributing to the development of proposals for grants.
- Experience in tracking and controlling project and product costs, ensuring budget compliance, and financial viability.
- Skilled in using grant management systems (e.g., Horizon, RIF platforms) and familiar with MS Excel and other project management software.
- Proven leadership and mentorship capabilities within a project management role.
- Familiarity with the EU funding landscape, especially in marine social sciences or related fields.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification
- Proven experience in managing EU-funded R&D/R&I projects in EU programs such as Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, Digital Europe, EDF
- Experience in R&D/R&I project coordination is a plus.
